Clinical Impact Across Nepal
A record of landmark medical infrastructure deployments — from radiation oncology to sports science — redefining the standard of care, province by province.
The Co-60 Breakthrough
Redefining Cancer Care in Nepal
For years, the logistical realities of Nepal's geography made consistent high-dose-rate brachytherapy an aspiration rather than a standard. RB Merchant changed that — by pioneering the Bebig Saginova Co-60 Brachytherapy platform: miniaturised sources that remain active for five years, built for resilience, not just performance.
The Co-60 unit eliminates the supply-chain vulnerabilities of Ir-192 sourcing, giving oncology departments a dependable, long-cycle treatment platform suited to Nepal's unique operational context.
A single installation at SKPCH, Khajura now serves a catchment of over 5 million people across two complete regions — patients who previously travelled hundreds of miles for radiation oncology treatment.
Milestones
- Eliminated Ir-192 supply-chain dependency for participating departments
- Five-year active source life, suited to Nepal’s logistics

Advanced GI Intervention
The Frontier of Third-Space Endoscopy
Pioneered the introduction of Third-Space Endoscopy, a cutting-edge advancement in therapeutic gastroenterology, through the implementation of the ERBE VIO 3 electrosurgical system and Micro-Tech GI accessories. RB Merchant facilitated comprehensive hands-on training for clinicians at internationally recognised centres of excellence, enabling the successful adoption and performance of advanced third-space endoscopic procedures.
Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) is a transformative procedure for patients with Achalasia Cardia. Performed entirely through the mouth — no external incisions, no general surgical risk — recovery is shortened from weeks to days.
RB Merchant's role extended to meticulous calibration, software integration, ongoing surgical-mode customisation, and proactive technical stewardship — ensuring Nepal's GI departments maintain international procedural standards.

What is POEM?
Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy is a transformative procedure for patients with Achalasia Cardia. Performed entirely through the mouth — no external incisions, no general surgical risk. Recovery shortened from weeks to days.
Why VIO 3?
Smart-logic precision: high-speed processors monitor tissue resistance thousands of times per second, delivering energy only where needed. EndoCut Q mode enables a bloodless surgical field for complex mucosal interventions — the precision that makes POEM possible.
The Paradigm Shift
Establishing Interventional Pulmonology in Nepal
Pulmonology in Nepal was a purely medical discipline. Severe lung disease, airway obstruction, and tumour blockages meant open surgery or travel abroad. RB Merchant changed the equation — pioneering Interventional Pulmonology as a life-saving, minimally invasive clinical reality.
Phase 1 — Partnership & Vision Alignment: identified Dr. Bishwash Sharma as a clinical pioneer and built the case for interventional pulmonology investment in Nepal.
Phase 2 — Technology Deployment: assembled and commissioned the multi-vendor technology matrix, from cryogen systems to consumables logistics.
Phase 3 — Sustained Clinical Excellence: ongoing workflow design, joint case support, and software stewardship to maintain international procedural standards.
Milestones
- Large-volume cryobiopsies
- Mechanical tumour debulking
- Emergency airway recanalization

Data-Driven Athletics
Nepal's Premier High-Performance Sports Science Lab
Traditional coaching instincts alone cannot take athletes to the international stage. RB Merchant bridged this gap — supplying, installing, and commissioning Nepal's first dedicated High-Performance Sports Science Lab in Kathmandu, built around objective physiological data and biomechanical precision.
Physiological tracking: the VO2 Master wearable metabolic analyser measures peak oxygen consumption breath-by-breath under real field conditions — no cables, no restrictions.
Biomechanical diagnostics: wireless EMG sensors and multi-axis force plates track muscle firing sequences and ground reaction forces in real time, revealing kinetic asymmetries instantly.
Elite athletes have been tested and profiled through the lab infrastructure, establishing a national baseline for athletic performance data.

Precision Calibration
Nepal Army Biomedical Workshop Infrastructure
Medical equipment that cannot be verified is a liability. RB Merchant supplied the Nepal Army with a comprehensive biomedical calibration arsenal — enabling centralised monitoring, maintenance, and quality assurance of life-saving equipment across all Army health establishments nationwide and UN deployments worldwide.
Prior to this deployment, Nepal Army health establishments lacked standardised tools to independently verify the performance of life-critical medical devices. This infrastructure closes that gap — enabling in-house calibration, reducing downtime, and ensuring that every device in every establishment meets clinical specification before it reaches a patient.

Why This Matters
Prior to this deployment, Nepal Army health establishments lacked standardised tools to independently verify the performance of life-critical medical devices. This infrastructure closes that gap — enabling in-house calibration, reducing downtime, and ensuring that every device in every establishment meets clinical specification before it reaches a patient.
Frontline Response to COVID-19
Critical Care Infrastructure Mobilised Across All 7 Provinces
